Celebrating 25 years of The Journal of Headache and Pain

This year marks the 25th anniversary of The Journal of Headache and Pain

After receiving its first Impact Factor in 2008, it has developed into one of the leading fully open-access journals in its field.

To kick off our celebrations, please enjoy this blog and video from the Editor-in-Chief, Paolo Martelletti, reflecting on the journal's inception and the contributions of scientists from around the world that have made the journal into what it is today.

Endogenous Treatments for Migraine Pain

Edited by: Adriana Della Pietra and Andrew Russo

This collection aims to provide a better understanding of the basic molecular mechanisms of endogenous pain management. This may lead to better and/or alternative migraine pain treatments based on an enhancement of endogenous analgesic systems.

Headache Burden in Children and Adolescents

Edited by: Marco Antônio Arruda and Timothy J. Steiner

This series will embrace estimates from worldwide of headache-attributed burden, studies characterising the headache disorders of childhood and their evolution throughout adolescence (especially longitudinal cohort studies), those providing insights into the diagnostic uncertainties of child and adolescent headache, and those proposing or evaluating systems of care for child and adolescent headache.

Spreading Depolarization in Headache Disorders

Edited by: Shih Pin Chen and Cenk Ayata

This new collection in The Journal of Headache and Pain invites researchers, clinicians, and academicians to discuss spreading depolarization, exploring its mechanisms, relevance, and implications in both primary and secondary neurological disorders.

Vascular Triggers of Headache Disorders

Edited by: Shih Pin Chen and Cenk Ayata

The Journal of Headache and Pain invites submissions on the interplay between vascular mechanisms and headache, particularly migraine, to our new Collection: Vascular Triggers of Headache.

Gender-Specific Aspects of Headache

Edited by: Antoinette Maassen van den Brink and Bianca Raffaelli

The Journal of Headache and Pain is calling for submissions to our Collection on Gender-Specific Aspects of Headache. This collection aims to explore the multifaceted relationship between gender (as well as biological sex) and headache, encompassing both biological and socio-cultural dimensions.

Neuroimmune Interplay in Headache

Edited by Gregory Dussor and Kristian Agmund Haanes

The Journal of Headache and Pain invites participating authors to submit their manuscripts to our Collection on Neuroimmune Interplay in Headache. This collection will explore the latest research on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of migraine-associated neuroimmune interplay, as well as the clinical implications of these findings.

One Health for Headache

Edited by Dr. Matilde Leonardi and Dr. Paolo Martelletti
The Journal of Headache and Pain is calling for submissions to our Collection on One Health for Headache. This Collection aims to create a cross-disciplinary space for those working within and across clinical, social, and public health paradigms to address and reduce the burden of headache globally and reduce disability from this major non-communicable disease.

Chronic Headaches and Medication Overuse

Edited by Dr. Gianluca Coppola
The Journal of Headache and Pain invites participating authors to submit to our Collection on Chronic Headaches and Medication Overuse. This thematic series intends to approach chronic headache and symptom overuse from a broad and multidisciplinary perspective centred on these and other unanswered concerns.

Behind the Paper

The story behind a simple idea: rethinking headache care as a way to improve population health globally

New Content Item (5)

In this blog, author Alberto Raggi discusses the process of compiling a recently published review in The Journal of Headache and Pain. The review asks, in an era of a changing landscape in global population health, if improving the overall health of people suffering from headache disorders will be a feasible way to improve global population health.

Aims and scope

The Journal of Headache and Pain is a peer-reviewed open access journal specifically dedicated to researchers involved in all aspects of headache and related pain syndromes, including epidemiology, public health, basic science, translational medicine, clinical trials and real-world data. With a multidisciplinary perspective, The Journal of Headache and Pain covers headache medicine and related pain syndromes in all medical disciplines and particularly encourages clinical, translational and basic science submissions in the areas of pain management, genetics, neurology and internal medicine. Editorial Board spotlight

Adriana Della Pietra, PhD, is a Postdoctoral researcher at University of Iowa, in the Carver College of Medicine, Iowa City, USA.

She completed her PhD in 2023 in the University of Eastern Finland, A.I. Virtanen Institute, Kuopio. Her research focused on unraveling the intricate migraine pain mechanisms via electrophysiological and chemoproteomic techniques. In particular, she examined the pro-nociceptive role of mechanosensitive Piezo1 channels within the trigeminovascular system implicated in migraine pain. Additionally, she explored the therapeutic anti-nociceptive potential of the endocannabinoid system to reduce migraine pain, promoting endogenous analgesia.

More recently, her work with Prof. Andrew Russo investigates the connection between mild traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic headache (PTH), and sleep disruption, proposing that impaired glymphatic system function contributes to PTH symptoms.

She is serving as a Guest Editor of the recently launched collection Endogenous Treatments for Migraine Pain.
